Superb Item Has Not Changed - Business Accounting Software Critique

By Matthew Murphy

I still need to learn more about Quicken and its intricacies but so far it's a winner! I really thought that Microsoft Money was a great product, even though I had some issues over the years of the product freezing for unknown reasons during sessions. Importing into Quicken was much less scary than I expected. It truncated a few items, but that's about as bad as it got. I cancelled the action. Went on the website and found out how to turn off the "register this Quicken" pop up and am using this program. They do not support their products in any meaningful way in terms of bug fixes. Applications from a software giant such as Intuit should be patched before the average user even recognizes a problem.

The help file isn't very helpful beyond basic (and I mean VERY basic) functionality. I guess you could call the help line, but my prior experience with Quicken is that they outsource the help desk to foreign countries, the technicians do not speak English as a first language and they read from a script leading you through the same not so helpful help file you just gave up on. If you are a Quicken 2008 owner who needs to download transactions via the web, upgrade to the new version with confidence. I have found that the program just seems to get worse with each new rendition. It has become more complicated to use, has many more glitches, is harder to get accurate reports from, and runs slower.

Hours later my stuff is still importing one transaction at a time, and each transaction requires several clicks. This is not going to work for active traders and investors!

So far I have not found one feature that is new that I would have willingly paid for. I'd like to say that I wish I had my old Q 2008 back, but then I'd lose my update capabilities sometime this year. Because of the very poor customer support and the step backwards in the user interface, I've downgraded my rating of Quicken 2011 to 3 stars. Hopefully, they will address these issues before the next upgrade. It isn't perfect, and I haven't quite figured out how use some of its functionality - in particular tracking our investments, but overall I'm quite happy. My bank said they cannot download my transaction to this accounting software because they do not use the newest file transfer systems. From personal experience, when problems do arise, it can be maddening. Unfortunately, there just isn't anything better that has the widespread use that Quicken enjoys which leads to enhanced compatibility with online services due to its sheer popularity.

I could now use Firefox for downloading transactions. Permissions, especially in Vista or Win 7: If you run your "every day login" as a non-admin access user for security purposes as do many security conscious users, make sure the instance of whatever browser you are using also has the same permissions.

If you are looking to convert from MS Money, I highly recommend you check if your financial institutions provide manual downloads that Money can import. There's a good chance it will save more time than using Quickens automatic update. I have been very pleased with this product! It is exactly what I was expecting in Financial Management software, and has been easy to learn how to use.
