Or, at least, use "msconfig" to stop the gazillion processes that run at startup. By doing so, it's actually pretty speedy.
The sound is the only week point I could find in the whole package. Not very loud and the speakers are poor quality. But after playing around on it, I determined that the stock operating system (Windows 7 Starter) and memory stick (1 GB DDR2) was sufficient for my needs. The netbook contains an SDHC card reader for downloading images.
However, I found that it was slow and experiencing system problems on just 1GB. I bought the 2GB upgrade from Crucial.
It's small (the keyboard takes a little practice) and light weight. It's more than fast enough. It is lightweight, charges rapidly, has a long battery life, comes with a built-in webcam, has a great feel to it....a "grippy" texture and is a pleasant shade of green! The keyboard is comfortable and it has plenty of ports to add on anything you want. I had an Asus for two years, but its keyboard was not full size and the hard drive not large enough. For academic work "on the road" and for international travel, I am finding the Toshiba Mini 505-N508 perfect.
This netbook will primarily be used for writing (poetry, novels-in-progress), email (Gmail), calendaring (Google calendar), some light entertainment (iTunes, little bits of you tube), and some light photo editing (Picasa, gimp for windows). It should be more than up to those tasks, and for most people I say it will be fine. I taxed it for about 2 hours on battery eco mode watching YouTube and surfing nonstop and it still says it has about 4 hours left on the meter. Maybe not quite the 8 hours claimed but pretty good. My 17" notebook was in the shop for all sorts of malfunctions, and I happened to see and read reviews of this mini notebook on Amazon. For its size, you get a lot of bang for your buck. Battery life is also great. Great job Toshiba, I am very happy.
I recently bought my netbook over two months ago and fell in love with it. It's great for typing up documents and watching movies/TV.
Once you add RAM and configure it correctly (see cons), it actually becomes very fast. The inclusion of a cut-down MS Office 2010 and Norton 30-day trial is very convenient. You have to sort of pry the card out when you want it out, but if you leave a card docked there, like I do, it's not a problem and it doesn't dangerously stick out the side of the machine when you are putting it into a case. Plus they save the cost and complexity of a spring. As an independent consultant/contractor, I repair computers, and do technical consulting. In general, I am just an all-around tech geek.
