The profits benefit pet charities. I bought this dog food initially because I like everything that I have tried from Newman's Products for humans.
With the cheap food, it smelled like rank dog poop! Would make you retch and gag! He has since passed and now I have 2 more labs. My labs are 7 and 5, and I have not heard of any change in formula, nor have I ever fed anything else. I tried another bag last week-- same results. Other dog owners/breeders/vets/handlers have also reported problems with Canidae foods over the past few months.
Then the idea came up that maybe she had chemical sensitivities...so we decided to go organic...all her deals miraculously cleared up once we started the Newman's. However after giving glowing reviews for many years, we now have to concede something has changed...our little Jack's itching returned to the point of drawing blood.
The dogs go nuts over it like a crack addiction! I am very happy that I have found a solution that is applicable to both dogs!
I am sold on Canidae. The dogs love this food more than the Solid Gold, but I believe that they are both fine foods. Now my jacks eat 1/2 a cup twice daily and they have never looked better. My Papillion eats 1/4 cup AM and 1/2 cup PM.
This dog food isn't exactly cheap, so you expect that they will provide what they are advertising. This whole "green washing" thing needs to be regulated better.
For most of my Shepherds life I fed her a well-known, vet recommended food, and yet she always had stomach problems. Trying many things, it was not until I rescued, and I should really say she rescued me, and the dog food recall, that I began doing research on brands of food.
Too bad she isn't getting any more of it. My Dog is really "Picky" when it comes to his food and I usually have to mix his old with his new for a few days "Until he will eat" his new food. I guess my animals (cat and dog) can't read the famous names on bag wrappings, as they almost refuse to eat this stuff unless nothing else available and they are hungry. This food is organic, sure. So I went and got the cat version. My big cat has lost weight and looks the best he has in years. They gobble it up! I now have it on subscription so we don't run out. She gets dry Newman's fed free style, and 4 ounces of Newman's canned every day. Her weight stays stable at 65 pounds which is perfect for her.

The "Canidae Team" didn't mention the formula change when I asked them about the down-sizing. LATTE MACHINE.
