Waste Of Money - Smallest Netbook Critique

By Benjamin Davis

I have been typing on every netbook I've come across for at least a year, and so far this keyboard has been the best one. Something about the way it's laid out just makes it seem more expansive.

I didn't add anything and am working on Windows Starter. The only difference with Word and Word Starter is you have to deal with a sidebar that has ads and stuff on it. I upgraded to the Windows 7 Premium for the $20.00 fee and am glad I did as the starter version does not allow personalization of things like power management, and has no real good media center. Battery life seems pretty good so far.

I bought this netbook as a work computer to program simulations and do basic research. I had to dual boot Ubuntu with windows because windows starter is a joke and give little to no functionality and slows down noticeably when more than one tab or window at a time. I also love that even though this laptop is small, the keyboard is full size. Overall, it is a great on-the-go laptop, especially for a college student.

Boot-up time is also reduced with 2GB. It's also great to just use email to transfer documents even when using a mac for certain things. This works great as a secondary computer; in fact, I was slightly surprised at how well my netbook works.

Furthermore I like the size of the keys, which are the largest of any netbook I've found, although the PC netbooks look like they have similar key size. The initial boot-up took about 10 minutes, during which I plugged in the power cord.

I also like placement of the SD card slot below the mouse pad, as well as the one-finger up/down scrolling feature. The closest competition to the NB505-N508BL would be the Asus PC netbooks which are about $25 less, but come with a 3-cell battery whereas the Toshiba comes with a 6-cell.

It's plenty loud and sounds fine. I also upgraded to windows 7 home premium, which boosted performance in my opinion. I am still using Starter 7 as I have not found a need to upgrade to the full edition of Windows 7. I did put the full Office 2010 suite on the machine as the Word starter was awkward and the large ad window distracting on the small screen. For Wi-Fi privacy, as well as accessibility to Websites forbidden in the countries that I was visiting (eg Myanmar and Saudi Arabia), I installed a free VPN from Security KISS. I also replaced the 30-day-trial Norton AV with Microsoft SE. This is a great little notebook. This is great for surfing the internet, shopping, and emailing. It really gets the job done, and it offers super comfortable use despite its small size. My husband just got one as well since I love mine so much! It's small, it's lightweight, it's relatively durable (I have a two-year old and it has survived her knocking it off the table, tripping over the cord, trying to adjust the angle of the screen and touching it with her sticky fingers). It doesn't get hot, can sit on my lap for hours.
