I Am So Satisfied - Corporate Finance Software Review

By Ethan Garcia

It's a shame, because all the bits and pieces are there to make this a great personal accounting program - but the YNAB rules and lack of reports make it unusable, if you know what you are doing and don't need to be led by the hand. And if you aren't very familiar with keeping track of your finances, YNAB is so complex and inflexible it would be very hard to get it to work as it is designed.

Thumbs up to this budgeting tool! After wasting hundreds of dollars on Mint.com, Quicken, and Mvelopes, I gave up on budgeting software programs. There was plenty of thought put into this software and I can't praise it enough! Anyone who'd like to get a grip on their financial situation will be pleasantly surprised with the ease and effectiveness of YNAB and can start down the path toward "financial peace." I strongly suggest that everyone who isn't currently using a budget give the YNAB software a try. Much has been written about the features and capabilities of YNAB so I won't repeat all that here. It is not for mortgage or investments or other kinds of financial things. If you bought it to do these things then you bought the wrong product.

I was up and running within a few days of installing it. I had some questions that were very quickly, and very kindly, answered by members of the fabulous forums.

But if you have multiple credit cards, checking, and savings accounts, hand download each month of data from each account and hand importing it, is rather painful. It's more time than I want to invest a couple times each month to follow my transactions by downloading from every account each time. I have been using YNAB Pro for two months now and I really enjoy using it! I have tried several budgeting software programs and there was always something that didn't work quite right for me. We did not need this so much for the potential of becoming debt-free. I'm using it for monthly money management!

The online tutorials and help are great. After very little experience, the process is simple and easy to understand. Been using YNAB for years, I don't follow all the rules but it is still great for tracking expenses, credit cards, checking accounts, and just knowing what you're doing with your money. Will never go back to quicken junk again. YNAB not only performs the needed computations of a budget, but organizes them on easy to read spreads. The budgeting principles taught along with the program truly saved my wife and I during a particularly hard month because we had a month's income saved to back us up.

The one thing I've always struggled with is that their model was to simply record what you've spent and review it against your budget. This is all well and good for those who are inclined that way, but it never worked for me. I have savings about twice that, and I live well within my means. However, I wanted to get back in touch with my budgeting because I mainly do it in my head, and it can get stressful because I "budgeted" by limiting my expenses at all times. After the year was over I had the option to renew, but I really did not want to pay what I thought was a high yearly fee. So I searched for something just like D.R's that was cheaper and all I had to pay was a one-time fee.
