The high potential for a dog attack is a harsh reality to those of us who go outside frequently. As a result, I sometimes find myself reluctant to continue my daily neighborhood exercise regiments, and it frustrates me. Come to find out, millions of dog attacks occur each year in the United States alone. So, I know for a fact I am not a lone in feeling frustration and fear of a potential dog attack.
Since dogs detect others' intentions by way body language, they can sense a malicious or casual presence no matter the species. It can be a cat, a human, or even another neighborhood dog, and they notice posture, tone and even body odor to communicate intent. They can even detect a female presence at greater distances because of natural pheromone emission - especially during perspiration.
Despite the nature of the body language, what is being communicated is a matter of interpretation. And, what is seen as casual or non-violent behavior to a human may be different to a dog. Therefore, it can simply be deduced that the behavior of the dog is not dependent on human behavior, demeanor, or movement. Rather, it is up to the dog how he interprets your presence. And who knows what a dog is thinking anyway?
Now whenever I walk, I maintain a comfortable distance from a dog anymore when I am walking or jogging in the neighborhood. But one day, a dog may not reciprocate keeping a safe distance; it wrinkled its nose and barked at me incessantly. When you are in that situation, the dog's barking alone will make the hair on the back of your neck stand straight up.
Some people advocate non-physical methods to deter an attacking dog; some even advocate sound devices. But I have yet to hear of a successful story of fending off an attacking dog using those methods. I did my own research, and found that many have recommended electronic dog repellent because of its effectiveness. So I visited the site that was recommended to me, I purchased the electronic dog repellent, and I have never felt safer than I do now.
