Cheap And Efficient Overall - Google Chrome Netbook Critique

By Brianna Garcia

I recently bought my netbook over two months ago and fell in love with it. It's great for typing up documents and watching movies/TV.

I typically get a good 7-8 hours without plugging it in. Screen resolution is as good as any monitor or other laptop I've seen. Low power, great CHIPSET design and just out run the competition. If you're looking to surf the net, print and edit a document here and there, these systems will do you great and last a few years. Although I'm a little dubious about the practicality of the "easy grip" top, it seems like a nice extra addition and makes the netbook look a little more polished. My only complaint has nothing to do with the netbook itself and everything to do with Microsoft Starter.

Something I could use for internet and email (while traveling), something I could watch Netflix on when I was in a room without a TV. So far I can do all of the above even though I'm working on the 1G memory card (the 2G is ordered). I installed the freeware Faststone Image Viewer to review my Canon RAW (.CR2) images. I replaced the Office Starter suite with Open Office.

Granted, I wouldn't want this to be my only computer, but for my use as a take-along, I can live without wallpaper choices and sophisticated word processing tools. Yes, it is a bit slower than my Dell Inspiron, but its speed is acceptable, and the price, size and weight more than compensate.

The screen is bright and clear and easy to read. All in all, this is a terrific little device and a great travel companion. We have these like teeny 7 inch ones at school and they are absolutely terrible, kind of brain washing me. However, when I just went to visit my aunt, who has a netbook, I used it and I realized how nice it is.

Its light, the monitor is clear and bright, the keyboard is bigger than most netbooks and the speakers are pretty decent. It's nice that the covers come in different jewel tones and that the keyboard has a surface that doesn't show fingerprints.

It does not get hot at all, which I found to be very surprising, even after hours and hours. It has a wonderful keyboard, it's very easy to use, and typing requires no unusual efforts. I love the look of the netbook and it was easy to set up right out of the box. I upgraded the memory as was recommended in several other reviews.

I like this little machine and I bought a Toshiba because my last one (Satellite) lasted a decade. Toshibas are unusually easy to take apart and repair, and this one looks like it would be easy to tear apart also. For photo editing and tracking I installed the Canon Photo Stitch software that came with the camera. The Laptop even plays back my HD videos at full resolution with only a slight amount of pausing (glitching) in Windows media player. I put in a second GB but haven't really noticed major improvements, it was fine before but it's nice knowing that it's already there. I also loaded Win7 Home because it was $20.
